Receiving Most U.S. Patents in 2001
Wilmington, DE – Congratulations to IBM Corporation who received 76% more U.S.
patents in 2001 than any company in the world. IBM Corporation received 3,453 U.S.
patents or 18% more patents than in 2000 followed by NEC Corporation of Japan who
received 1,966 patents according to the current edition of the Patent Intelligence and
Technology Report (PITR).
Of the 10 highest ranking companies receiving U.S. patents in 2001 only IBM
Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc. are based in the USA. Micron Technology,
Inc. received 1,643 US patents in 2001 moving from seventh place in 2000 to fourth
place in 2001. All counts in the Patent Information and Technology Report are based upon multiple assigned records of all
Utility and Statutory Patents.
IBM Corporation received most of its patents for software related inventions and
inventions in areas such as networked information processing, data storage and
microelectronics.
