IFI Reference to US Class Revision Orders

What is it?

This reference tool offers easy access to USPTO class code revisions, to help you identify classification changes over time. A single current classification often has multiple source classes, and also can reflect a series of reclassifications noted in various classification change orders.

The IFI Reference to US Class Revision Orders includes:

When do you need it?

  1. You have a search strategy that includes obsolete USPTO classification codes. The subject coverage of the codes is unknown, and you need to update the search strategy with current class codes.
  2. You have a file of old references in hard copy, filed or indexed under their original USPTO classifications. To find the references you want, you need to identify earlier equivalents of a current classification, either for a specific date, or for a complete series of class revisions over a period of time.
  3. A client has provided you with a USPTO class number to research, but you don't know the date of the class or the appropriate current classifications.

What is the coverage?

The first release of the IFI Reference to US Class Orders covers all USPTO class change orders from January 1983 forward. For mechanical classes, the coverage is complete from January 1979 (class order 666) forward.

Subsequent releases of the class order reference will include coverage of classification changes to mechanical classes back to 1972.
