The 2025 U.S. Top 50 patent ranking highlights key shifts in innovation. Samsung Electronics maintained its lead with 7,054 grants. Following Samsung are TSMC and Qualcomm, while several automotive manufacturers like Toyota and Honda advanced their positions. Conversely, major tech companies including Apple, Google, and Amazon experienced a decline in their rankings.

Analyzing 2025 patent trends

Beyond volume and assignees, the trends of 2025 reveal a fundamental shift in the U.S. innovation landscape, with Asian countries now accounting for 60% of the Top 50 U.S. patent assignees—up from 48% in 2016. While American companies still secure the largest number of grants in absolute terms, over half of all U.S. patents are now awarded to international organizations. Notably, Taiwan, China, and South Korea saw double-digit gains in patent grants in 2025, while the U.S. experienced a 5% decline.
